About Mcgill University

The McGill University was founded by royal charter and granted by King George IV in 1821. The university takes the name of James McGill, a merchant from Montreal, whose bequest in 1813 formed the university's precursor, McGill College.

The university is one of Canada's best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the leading universities in the world. The Maclean's University Rankings 2019 has ranked McGill first in Canada among medical-doctoral universities.

McGill University also has one of the highest employability ratings. The McGill graduates are highly sought after by the employers.

The main campus called the downtown campus is located in downtown Montreal at the foot of Mount Royal. The second campus called the MacDonald campus is located 18 km away in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. Admission Procedures

How to Apply

The admission procedure has been effectively segregated depending upon the level of education as well as the various courses offered by the University. The former category takes into account the undergraduate, graduate and professional courses along with its annual summer programs while the latter is subdivided into the Medical school, Law school; Schools of Education, Design, Arts and Sciences and so on. 

  1. Create an account on the McGill University application website. Remember your Login ID and PIN as these will be necessary later.
  2. Fill in the details required by the application. The necessary details include biographical information, educational details, choice of program and Test scores if you have taken tests like SAT, AP exams or TOEFL.
  3. Submit your application and complete the application payment through a credit card (Visa/MasterCard/AmEx). The card does not need to be in your name, so if you don’t own a credit card, you can use someone else’s.
  4. You will receive a confirmation mail from McGill within 48 hours of submitting the application. Contact McGill Service Desk if you do not receive the mail.
  5. Log in to the McGill application management portal Minerva, and submit all the supporting documents necessary for completing the application. Keep in mind that the documents should be submitted as soon as possible.
  6. Applications should be submitted before November for the January semester next year.

For Undergraduate Applicants:

  • Proof of English Language Proficiency is to be submitted. TOEFL is the most popular form of proof of English Proficiency, but other tests such as Pearson Test of English, or IB courses are also acceptable.
  • Test scores such as SAT or AP exams, along with unofficial transcripts from the high school. Official transcripts must be sent if they are requested in a sealed envelope from the school.
  • Any other supporting document requested via Minerva.

For Graduate Applicants:

Graduate school requires you to select your program before your application. Each program has its own required documents.

  • All applications require the following documents: Online Application and Application fee, Transcripts from Institution, and two letters of recommendation from faculty who are willing to provide them.
  • Additionally, a personal statement, and portfolio may be necessary for the creative programs.
  • Additional test scores like TOEFL and GRE are required for Engineering and Technology programs.
  • GMAT scores, along with TOEFL might be necessary for the relevant courses.
  • The above documents are sufficient for most programs. Other documentation might be required for some programs.

It consists of a fully-equipped fitness centre, two outdoor playing fields, a hockey and skating arena, indoor swimming pool, outdoor tracks etc.
The university has 29 intercollegiate teams, competitive clubs, 700 intramural teams and a Fitness and Recreation program for their students.
The campuses are well connected with public transport such as metro station and bus.

Accommodation details

McGill University provides accommodation facility to its undergraduate and graduate students.
There are 13 undergraduate downtown residences which include 3 hotel-style residences, 6 dorm-style residences and 4 apartment-style residences. The costs range from $1200 to $1600 for single rooms, and $900 to $1300 for double rooms.
Their graduate students can choose between single bedrooms in shared-facilities houses and single occupancy apartments.
All halls are equipped with single size/queen size beds and mattress, desk and study chair, dresser, bookshelf, night table and vertical blinds.

The university has a 245-hectare forested reserve with 25 km of scenic walking.
