About Lancaster University

Lancaster University was founded in 1964 by the Royal Charter and is one of the UK's premier research-intensive institutions. It is one of the country's only six collegiate institutions, having partnerships with NHS, GCHQ, LEP, CEH, EA, Sunway University, and UFLA, Brazil. The institution was originally located at St. Leonard's Gate.

Lancaster University Campus

In 1968, the site was relocated to Bailrigg in South Lancaster. Previously, the institution had four colleges: Cartmel, County, Lonsdale, and Bowland. After 1990, Grizedale, Fylde, Furness, Pendle, and Graduate were established. It now comprises nine colleges with a total of 18 research programs.

How to Apply to Lancaster University?

Eligibility for UG

  • Normative requirements: At the time of admission to the International Study Center, you must be at least 17 years old.
  •  Academic: A good high school diploma or equivalent is required. Year 11 completion with a 65 percent or HSC with a 50% (for Indian students).
  • Mathematical requirements: Students interested in studying Business and Management, Engineering and Computing, Life Sciences, or Mathematics and Statistics must have passed mathematics in their senior year of high school.
  • Language requirements in English: To begin your International Foundation Year, you must have a basic command of the English language. When you appear at the International Study Center, your language abilities will be checked as well.

Eligibility for UP

  • Age: At the time of admission to the International Study Center, you must be at least 20 years old.
  • Academic: Completed required initial qualifications in their citation with flying colours.
  • Bachelor's degree: 55 percent for 3-year undergrad (Hons), 60 for 3-year undergrad (Regular Pass), and 55% for 4-year undergrad (Any) (For Indian Students).
  • Language requirements in English:To begin your Pre-Masters Program, you must have a basic command of the English language. When you come to the International Study Center, your language abilities will be checked as well.
    • To begin the three-term program, you must have an English language level of academic IELTS 5.5 or above in all four components.
    • To begin the two-term program, you must have an English language level equal to academic IELTS 6.0 or above in all four components.

If you don't fulfill the English language requirements for the Pre-Masters Program, you may enroll in a 10- or 20-week Online Pre-sessional English for Pre-Masters program.

Life at the Lancaster University

  • Lancaster University is home to more than 175 different societies. Sports, hobbies, politics, academics, culture, and religion are all common topics.
  • During Freshers Week, there are several fairs where different clubs and organisations may market themselves.
  • Barkers is located on Cartmel College's South-West campus. This pub is housed in an ancient farm home with contemporary twists and many personalities. The menu is traditional pub fare, with dishes ranging from lasagne to burgers and pizzas.
  • Their Sports Centre just received a brand new, purpose-built expansion, doubling its capacity. They now have four sports halls to choose from. All are outfitted with the latest technology and may be reserved online.
  • Many Costa Coffee shops are on campus, but the Costa Coffee store facing Alexandra Square is among the most popular spots to relax and have a wonderful coffee with friends!

Accommodation at Lancaster University

Since 2010, their accommodation has been crowned 'Best University Halls' eight times at the renowned National Student Housing Awards in the United Kingdom.

For students, postgraduates, and families, they provide about 7000-bed places.

Most first-year students prefer to live on campus their first year, and many find our college environment to be an ideal setting for making friends and settling in.

There are eight undergraduate colleges to select from, each of which divides the university community into smaller communities and houses all students.

Lancaster University On-Campus Accommodation

Lancaster University boasts some of the finest on-campus housing in the United Kingdom.

Within the residences, each graduate student gets their room. The weekly cost ranges from 115 GBP to 200 GBP, depending on the accommodation type (Standard, Ensuite, etc.).

On-Campus accommodation portfolio is split into 4 main room categories:

  • Private bathrooms are available in Ensuite rooms (3,522 rooms);
  • Standard accommodations (1,430 rooms) feature a communal bathroom and shower.
  • The common W/C and shower facilities in townhouse rooms are likewise shared. However, the ratio is just one to two persons. These residences also offer a large living space (515 rooms);
  • Self-contained studios offer a kitchenette and a private WC/shower. (144 pieces)

Heating, power, wired and wireless internet, and campus protection are all included with the lodging expenses. Your belongings are also covered for a total of £10,000 in insurance. All common areas in our student halls, such as kitchens, shared washrooms, and corridors, are cleaned on a basic basis; however, you must clean your room! The studio apartments, family flats, and townhouses do not have a cleaning service.

Lancater University Off-Campus Accommodation

  • Superior ensuites are available at Cartmel, County, and Lonsdale Colleges for a weekly fee of 197.61 GBP.
  • Bowland College's basic standard rooms cost 147.14 GBP a week.
  • Bowland College's basic ensuite rooms cost 183.61 GBP a week.
  • One university-managed student hall in the city center, Chancellor's Wharf, is open to students from all institutions. It's simply a few minutes walk to the shops, bars, and regular buses to campus from this location on the shores of the Lancaster Canal.
  • Many students choose to rent a room in a communal or whole home, with four to five bedrooms being the most common size. There are also studios and one-bedroom units available.

Key Attractions

  • The Sugarhouse - The Sugarhouse nightclub is owned and operated by the university's Students' Union. It's the city's largest nightclub, only available to students.
  • Market - The historic bi-weekly Charter Market, which began in 1193, fills the cobblestone walkways with the fragrances of foreign and local delicacies, selling everything from fresh fruit to books and jewellery.
  • Theatre and film - Lovers of independent cinema and theatre have a variety of wonderful venues to choose from, many of which also regularly host big comedy and theatre tours
  • Pendle Witch Trail - The Pendle Witch Trail is around 45 miles long and follows the lonely journey that the Pendle Witches travelled across the Ribble Valley to Lancaster Castle, where they were tried in 1612.
  • Music and festivals - Lancaster hosts various colourful events throughout the year. Lancaster Music Event, Highest Point, and the Jazz Festival are highly anticipated, with live music and dancing filling the streets.
