George Brown College is a public college in the country of Canada. It was established in 1966 by the Ontario Government. The George Brown College is named after the famous journalist and politician, Mr. George Brown. It opened its doors to students in the following year. It has the best faculty members, and its prime location in downtown Ontario ensures students get the best quality education. George Brown College offers a wide range of graduate and post-graduate courses and also has multiple student clubs. For promoting entrepreneurship, an entrepreneurship hub is present.

George Brown College in Canada 

George Brown College has 3 campuses that offer various graduate and post-graduate programs in different domains like art, business, culinary arts, and hospitality. The 3 campuses of the college are the St. James campus, the Waterfront campus, and the Casa Loma campus. The Casa Loma campus was the first to be established, followed by the other two campuses. Moreover, all the campuses are only a short distance away from each other.

George Brown College St James Campus 

The St. James campus has centers and schools for five main disciplines. It houses the Centre for Business, Centre for Arts, Design and IT, Centre for Community Services and Early Childhood, Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts, and the Centre for Preparatory and Liberal studies.  

George Brown College Waterfront Campus

The Waterfront campus accommodates the Daphne Cockwell Centre for Health Sciences, which has the School of Dental Health, School of Health Services and Management, School of Health and Wellness, and the Sally Horsfall Eaton School of nursing. The School of Design is located in the Daniels Waterfront too. The Office of Research and Innovation is located on this campus as well.

The Casa Loma campus houses the Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies, the Centre for preparatory and Liberal Studies, and the Centre for Arts, Design, and IT.   

George Brown College Admissions

First of all, students must see the list of programs open to international students since not all programs are open to them. Once a program is selected, the student must make sure that he/she is meeting all the requirements, including English Proficiency requirements. Additionally, each course has a few other requirements like a letter of recommendation, past academic performance, etc. 

Students must submit their applications according to the admission cycle dates specified by George Brown College. Students can apply online by paying an application fee of 95 CAD or get the help of an authorised agent of the college to help with visa processing and applications.

The English requirements and academic requirements vary for each program. For being eligible, a student must be above the age of 18 years. The student can provide proof of English proficiency by appearing for any language test accepted by the college.

For graduate courses in IT, Construction, and Engineering, a student must possess a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics in 10th and 12th grade. For other programs, a student must possess passing scores in English and Mathematics in Grade 10 if they did not have mathematics in 12th grade.

Please note that the college will not accept all students who meet the minimum requirements of the courses/programs. The final decision about a student’s application is made after the college considers a variety of factors like academic performance, program capacity and diversity goals. The college also has the right to stop enrolments if all the places are filled.

George Brown College Fees 

Application fee 

George Brown College has a CAD 95 application fee. This is a non-refundable fee and it allows a maximum of three intakes within an academic year. 

Tuition fees

The tuition fees start at around CAD 2,800 for the EAP, ESL programs and vary for other programs. For diploma/ certificate programs and graduate certificate/ postgraduate programs, the tuition fees are upwards of CAD 15,000 for two semesters. For degree programs, it is upwards of CAD 18,000. Specialised programs like the Game Art program, Interactive Media Management program, etc the tuition fees are around CAD 9,000 per semester. 

Each program requires students to pay for some additional expenses such as incidental expenses and health insurance. Costs of both vary for programs. The books and study materials cost extra and they vary too. Students can opt for the homestay option with several facilities that cost extra.

Cost of Living and Accommodation Costs

The cost of living in Canada is quite high. Ontario is one of the most expensive cities in the world. It is a bit expensive for international students. A student would need at least CAD 2000 for a comfortable stay in Canada. It is worth noting that the cost of living depends on the lifestyle of the student as well. The rent alone costs somewhere between $500-CAD 1200, according to the George Brown college’s website. 

Public transport fees

The website of George Brown college recommends that students set aside an amount of CAD 1,500 for public transportation costs. If you happen to lease/purchase a car, then it is obviously going to cost extra along with fuel costs. 

Language Test Costs 

The language tests accepted by the George Brown College are the George Brown Admissions test (the college’s test), Cambridge English Exams, CAEL, MELAB, TOEFL, and IELTS. The costs of these tests are different. For example, the TOEFL costs CAD 245

George Brown College Scholarships  

International students are eligible for scholarships at George Brown College. The scholarships are usually provided in the form of in-program awards. These are based on the academic performance of a student, although some other factors are considered too. Each scholarship has different deadlines and requirements that a student must meet. 

  1. Diploma/ Degree Scholarships: Thirty-one scholarships are awarded to students pursuing Diploma/ Degree courses. These are divided into two competitions, the fall, and the winter competition. Both have scholarships worth CAD 1,000 and CAD 5,000.
  2. Certificate scholarships: Thirty-four scholarships are awarded worth CAD 2,000 to the students pursuing a certificate or post-graduate certificate program. 
  3. EAP Scholarship: George Brown college awards eighteen scholarships to students of the EAP program worth CAD 1,000. 
  4. Woori Education Scholarship (worth CAD 2,000)
  5. Assist – On Scholarship (worth CAD 1,000)
  6. Kimokran (Toronto) Scholarship (worth CAD 1,000)

George Brown College IELTS Requirement

George Brown College has different requirements for different courses/ programs. For Diploma/ Certificate programs students must possess a score of 6 bands with a minimum of 5.5 in each skill band. For Post-Graduate programs, students must possess a score of 6.5 bands with a minimum of 6.0 in each skill band. And, for the GBC Degree programs, students must possess a score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each skill band. 

For other languages tests like TOEFL, MELAB, etc, the requirements vary. They are given on the George Brown college website.
