About Northumbria University

Northumbria University, originally known as Newcastle Polytechnic, is an open university created in 1969 by the amalgamation of three regional colleges: Rutherford College of Technology, the College of Art & Industrial Design, and the Municipal College of Commerce.

Newcastle Polytechnic was renamed the University of Northumbria in 1992 as part of a statewide initiative to transform polytechnics into universities.
