About Northumbria University

Northumbria University, originally known as Newcastle Polytechnic, is an open university created in 1969 by the amalgamation of three regional colleges: Rutherford College of Technology, the College of Art & Industrial Design, and the Municipal College of Commerce.

Newcastle Polytechnic was renamed the University of Northumbria in 1992 as part of a statewide initiative to transform polytechnics into universities. The University of Northumbria in Newcastle was the official title, and it still is. However, the trade name was changed to Northumbria University in 2002.

Northumbria University Campus

The City Campus and the Coach Lane Campus are the two campuses that make up the university. The City campus creates an atmosphere that stimulates study and self-development with its award-winning design, contemporary teaching structures, and remarkable sports facilities. This site also houses the University Library, with thousands of books, periodicals, e-books, scholarly articles, and records. A sports complex, the Computer and Information Sciences Center, and high-tech Biological Sciences and engineering facilities are located.

Coach Lane, the second campus, is host to all students in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences and has outstanding computer and library services and its own contemporary Students' Union and new athletic facilities. Both campuses are within walking distance of cafés, restaurants, and basic shops.
