The person who is desiring for the profession of Architect has to register himself/herself with the Council of Architecture. The Council of Architecture (COA) is passed by the Government of India, under the provisions of the Architects Act enacted by the Parliament of India on 1st September 1972. The major functions of the COA are to regulate the education and practice of professions all over India and also to maintain the registration of the architects.
The main aim of the COA is to provide the regulations for the standard of education, recognized qualification and registration of architects and also for their practice. Anyone who wants to register with the COA must possess the required qualifications as mentioned in the Architects Act.
The COA will provide an up to date certificate of Registration if the person is 21 once to it and it also allows him/her to practice the profession of Architecture. It also enables a person to make use of the title and the style of the Architect.
- If anyone misuses it or falsely claims to be registered, he will be punished under section 36 or 37 (2) of the Architects Act, 1972.
- The Architects Regulations, 1989 governs the profession of an architect.
- A firm of architects can also use the style and title of architect.
- The Council of Architecture takes care of the standard of education in the institutions.
- The COA also monitors the eligibility criteria for admission, course duration, content, examination, and also the standard of staff and accommodation.

COA Registration
Before going to the COA registration process, always have a scanned copy of your documents such as photo, provisional certificate, etc. Here are some steps to be followed during the registration process for the COA:
- Go to the website https://www.coa.gov.in/
- Click the option “Student enrollment”.
- Search the Institute or College name
- Enter your academic year.
- Enter the details such as name, date of birth, etc.
- Upload the necessary documents required.
NOTE:
- The photo size should be in the range of 4 to 10kb.
- The signature should be between 2 to 4kb.
- The provisional certificate should be between 20 to 100kb.

The Council of Architecture can be renewed by following the procedures given below

Council of Architecture (COA) Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria defined by COA for all the institutions to follow include
- The students must have passed with a minimum of 50% on the board exams of the senior secondary with Mathematics as the main subject.
- Or the students must have passed with a minimum of 50% on the Diploma with Mathematics.
