Physics was one of the main subjects for Science students. Often associated with numbers, problems, cases, derivations, and calculations, physics is an amazing subject if studied thoroughly. For all the students of Science sections, who continue in their stream after their school gets over, Physics remains as the main subject for them. If one understands the concepts deeply, physics instantly becomes an easier subject for them.

MinnickPhysics

For Engineering Students, physics is the most important subject. Engineering physics today is one of the most demanded subjects in the market of India. Offered in only 7 Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Dhanbad, IIT Roorkee, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras, and IIT Guwahati) this stream offers good chances of placement in reputable companies.

Engineering Physics Books

When one takes up Physics as their subject, cramming up should go away from their life. Physics in Engineering especially is not the subject that needs mugging up the derivations and just putting it in any problem just for the sake of solving it. One should refer to different books and then read up the notes given by their teacher to understand the subject better.

Derivations should be first understood, and then the problems should be solved. One single chapter can contain many concepts, and each concept can have more than one derivations. Try to solve each derivation by applying them to problems. Practicing for solving the questions leaves only the revision part during the exam time.

Here are some books which might help you during the exam time. These books can be referred to along with the class notes.

  • A Textbook of Engineering Physics by M.N. Avadhanulu
  • Physics for Scientists and Engineering by Douglas C. Giancoli and Raymond A. Serway
  • Physics for Engineers by M.R. Srinivasan
  • Applied Physics for Engineers by Mehta Neeraj
  • Modern Engineering Physics by A.S. Vasudeva
  • Physics for Engineers and Scientists by Hans C. Ohanian and John Markert

Engineering Physics Syllabus

Syllabus might vary a bit from institute to institute, but the entire course mostly focuses on the concepts of Physics and application of Maths. The knowledge and depth of the subject grow with each passing year.

There is a total of 3 years for the course of Engineering Physics. The subjects are divided accordingly.

  • In the first year, it’s all about the math! You will learn different types of Calculus and Algebra. Don’t wait for Physics. You will have lots of it later. In the first year, you will also be introduced to mechanics, thermodynamics, and classical physics. The subject of computer science is also taught in the first year. Make these subjects strong. If your basics are strong, you are already prepared for the future.
  • In the first half of the start of the second year, you will have more courses in physics but will start with mathematics. Some of those are the theory of probability, numerical analysis, statistics, ordinary differential equations, vector analysis, and complex analysis. With this, you will be almost completed with your math part and are ready for physics. By the ending of the second year, you will be done with the second part of modern physics and mechanics and the first section of the electrodynamics.
  • The third-year is the final year of the course. Here you complete it with the second sections of the solid-state physics, quantum physics, statistical physics, electrodynamics, and fluid mechanics.

Newton’s Ring Engineering Physics

Named after the very famous Issac Newton, Newton’s ring is when there is an interference pattern created with the reflection of the source of light in between any two surfaces that could be spherical or adjacently touching the flat surface. Issac Newton first studied it in 1717.

The fringes are formed because of the following process:

  • A plano-convex lens that as a big radius of curvature is placed on a flat glass plate had its surfaces curved faces on the glass plate. A thin wedged film of air (with an increasing thickness) is formed between the glass plate and the lends. There is zero contact of air film at the contact point, which keeps increasing away from the contact point.
  • If the monochromatic light is allowed to fall on the part of the lens from the sources normally, then two rays which are reflected interfere. This produces a patterned circular in nature. This interference pattern has bright and dark concentric rings around the contact point.
  • If the source of light is replaced with light, which in color then a few only a few rings colored in nature can be seen around the dark center, the illuminating point is seen later in the view.

What is engineering physics?

Engineering Physics includes a combination of the following principles:

  • Mechanical or material Engineering
  • Aerospace
  • Electronic
  • Electrical
  • Computer Science
  • Nuclear
  • Social Science
  • Biology
  • Maths
  • And all bits of engineering

The course of engineering physics focuses on methods for its application designing and development of new solutions for the streams of engineering. In some places, Engineering, physics is also termed as “technical physics.”

The discipline of Engineering Physics is for creations and optimization for offering solutions though different principles. Engineering Physics lays emphasis more on the analytical, designing, and development part. It fills the gap between the practical part of engineering and theoretical science.

Engineering Physics on the undergraduate level is offered in forms of B.Tech., B.Sc., Ph.D., and M.Sc. A lot many career opportunities are there for those as different professionals. It covers many streams such as Optics, nanoscience, materials science, bioengineering, quantitative finance, information technology, fluid dynamics, computational engineering, dynamical systems, and much more. There are institutes which include specialization of applied science.

Engineering Physics in India

Various colleges in India offer the course of Engineering Physics. Out of these colleges, there are seven branches of the Indian Institute of Technology. These seven branches of Indian Institute of Technology are IIT Bombay, IIT Guwahati, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Dhanbad, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Hyderabad. It is mostly advised for people to take up the Masters course of Engineering Physics after completing the Bachelor’s degree.

The course needs a strong foundation of academics. You have to combine both the parts of electrical as well as pure physics. Don’t be scared when you see the heavy syllabus as it is equally fruitful too. The content is huge but equally interesting. The course is huge in demand, especially in research areas of the engineering world. If you have a liking for physics and are great at mathematics too then, Engineering Physics is a great stream for your life. Some side careers can also be in non-core jobs or data analytics. You will have great knowledge that will not be limited in any way.

Compton Effect Engineering Physics

When photons with high energy collide with a target releasing loosely bound electrons from the outer shell of the molecule or the atom, the phenomenon is known as Compton Effect Engineering Physics. Here the photon theory by Einstein is bought in notice when the experience of radiation scattered produces a shift in the wavelength that actually can’t be explained.

But why is the Compton Effect important in Engineering Physics? Compton effect is an important concept as it proves how the light is not solely a wave phenomenon.

Compton effect shows how there is an increase in the wavelength as well as a decrease in the energy when the photons of gamma rays or X-rays interact with the matter.

There is a mix of three important formulas throwing light on the aspects of the modern and classical physics:

  • Trigonometry: Cosines law
  • Light as a particle: photoelectric effect
  • Relativistic dynamics: Theory of relativity
