Modeled after the civic university movement of the 19th century, the University of Manchester is a public research red brick institute located on Oxford Road in England. Established in 2004, it is a member of the elite Russel Group. The university offers both undergraduate as well as postgraduate degrees as well as diplomas and certifications.

There are over 1000 degrees in humanities, science, engineering, and business subjects. Including foundation courses, bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, MBAs, and PhDs.

University of Manchester Faculties

The University of Manchester has three main faculties – Faculty of Biology, medicine, and Health, Faculty of Science and Engineering, and Faculty of Natural Sciences.

The Faculty of Biology, Medicine, and Health is split into the School of Biological Sciences, School of Health Sciences, and School of Medical Sciences.

Faculty of Science and Engineering comprises the School of Engineering and School of Natural Sciences. Each school is further divided into different departments respectively.

Faculty of Natural Sciences includes four academic schools, School of Environment, Alliance Manchester Business School, School of Arts, Language and Cultures, and School of Social Sciences, Education and Development.

University of Manchester Admissions

To apply for admission to University of Manchester courses, both program-specific requirements and the university’s general entry requirements must be satisfied by international students. It’s best to apply at least a year before the start of the expected start date of the program.

The admission process is different for both UG and PG programs –

For UG Programs: Applications are to be submitted through UCAS

For PG Programs: Applications are invited through the online application portal.

The University of Manchester requires a non-refundable application fee of £60 for all their courses. This can be paid using their online payment service. Applications shall only be considered once the application fee has been paid.

University of Manchester Eligibility Criteria

For Masters

  •    Graduated from a 4-year UG degree with first-class from a relevant field. 
  •   Minimum eligibility requirements, English proficiency has to be proved through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test

For Undergraduation

Indian students applying for UG programs at the University of Manchester would require to obtain 80% in class XII and 85% for management programs while students applying for UG Science and Engineering with Integrated Foundation Program would require an overall of 70% in Math, 75% in Physics, and 65% in Physics.

University of Manchester Accommodation

All international students are guaranteed accommodation through either university-owned or managed halls. The University has over 8000 rooms spread across 19 resident halls with varying types, costs, and locations. The residence is usually for 40-42 weeks. An initial deposit of GBP 4000 has to be paid once a room has been allotted.

University of Manchester Scholarships

The University of Manchester offers more than 100 merit-based scholarships to its incoming students. Students coming from low-income families who are under the age of 25 are awarded GBP 1000 every year. Students of high academic excellence are awarded subject-specific scholarships ranging from GBP 1000 to GBP 5000.

Apart from these scholarships, international students also have the opportunity to apply for other UK scholarships that will cover transportation, tuition fees, and living expenses such as GREAT Scholarships.

Amongst UK higher education institutions, the University of Manchester has one of the biggest estates spread across 667 acres.

Various facilities are available on the campus apart from the different academic blocks and accommodations such as the sports center, library, etc. One of the only five UK libraries designated as ‘National Research Libraries’ is part of the University of Manchester.

University of Manchester Working while Studying

International students have the option of opting for part-time jobs, both available on campus as well as around the city of Manchester. An online vacancy service for such opportunities is available from the university’s career services.

During the semester, international students on Tier 4 UK student visas are allowed to work for a maximum of 20 hours a week, while there is no limit to the work hours during vacations.

However, students who are pursuing a certificate or diploma can only work up to 10 hours a week.
