  • SJSU's student population is one of the most ethnically diverse in the nation. As of fall 2018, both Asian and international student enrollments at SJSU were the highest of any campus in the CSU system.
  • In 1982 the English department began sponsoring the annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest.
  • The university and the city of San Jose agreed to form a joint city-university library located on campus, this is the first known collaboration of this kind in the US.
  • In 2008, SJSU received a CASE Wealth-Engine Award in recognition of raising over $100 million for educational fundraising. SJSU was one of approximately 50 institutions nationwide honored by CASE in 2008.

About San Jose State University

The San Jose State University (SJSU) was established in 1857 as the Minns Evening Normal School in San Francisco, founded by George W Minns. It was later moved to San Jose in 1871, it's name was changed 5 more times before they finally settled with San Jose State University in 1974. SJSU is the oldest public university on the West Coast and the founding university of the CSU system. It is ranked as the fourth most transformative college in the US by Money magazine.

San Jose State University Campus

The main campus of SJSU consists of about 55 buildings and covers about 154 acres, it is situated in downtown San Jose.  The south campus is located on South 7th Street, approximately 2.4 kilometers south of the main campus. The SJSU also constructed the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library in the fall of 2000.

San Jose State University Rankings

According to the US News and World Report 2020 college rankings, SJSU ranked 7th for western regional public universities. It was 5th for Social Mobility and is the 10th most innovative university. It is ranked as the fourth most transformative college in the US by Money magazine. It's ranked no. 295 for institutions nationwide on the 2019 Forbes Top Colleges list, and no. 40 on the 2019 list of America's best value colleges.

San Jose State University Students

San Jose State University Achievements and rewards

In spring 2007 one of the SJSU engineering professor and his students developed the ZEM Car, a Human Hybrid Powered Vehicle. It won the National I2P Competition for EPICS at Princeton University. It made headlines as the first car to be powered by human, solar and electric energy. The MLK Jr. Library won the Library Journal's 2004 library of the year award, additionally, the Tower Hall of SJSU won an award for one of the oldest buildings located in that area.
